On Wednesday, October 15, 2025, Dr. Oludare Ogunlana, Founder of ÒGÚN Security Research and Strategic Consulting (OSRS), joined a national panel on Kaftan TV via Zoom to discuss the topic “Ponzi Schemes and Cybersecurity — Quest for Quick Money.” The session explored how digital scams continue to exploit trust, technology, and financial desperation in Nigeria and beyond.

Understanding Ponzi Schemes and Cybersecurity

Ponzi schemes promise quick profits but rely on money from new investors to pay old ones. They collapse once new recruits stop joining. With the rise of online banking and social media, these schemes now use cyber tools to spread faster and wider.

Fraudsters create fake investment websites, social media ads, and Telegram groups. They use flashy dashboards and false testimonials to build trust. Victims lose savings while criminals move funds through cryptocurrency wallets that are hard to trace.

Dr. Ogunlana explained that the link between Ponzi schemes and cybersecurity lies in how cybercriminals exploit both human greed and digital weakness. Poor awareness, weak regulations, and limited financial education make people easy targets.

Real Cases and Lessons for Nigeria

Nigeria has witnessed major Ponzi disasters such as MMM Nigeria in 2016, MBA Forex Trading, and international cases like OmegaPro. Millions of citizens lost money and confidence in online investments.

Dr. Ogunlana urged the public to verify every investment through official bodies like the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) before making a payment. He warned against any platform promising 20–30% monthly returns, recruitment-based profits, or “withdrawal fees.” These are clear signs of fraud.

He also called for stronger coordination among EFCC, NITDA, NCC, and SEC to investigate and block suspicious sites early. Public education and timely alerts can save thousands of families from financial ruin.

What OSRS Can Do to Help

ÒGÚN Security Research and Strategic Consulting (OSRS) is committed to protecting citizens and institutions from online fraud. The firm provides:

  • Cyber Awareness Programs for communities, churches, and universities.

  • Training on Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) and digital investigation.

  • Workshops for law enforcement on tracking online scams and cryptocurrency transactions.

  • Public Safety Campaigns that teach people to identify fake investment schemes.

OSRS believes cybersecurity is not just technical; it is social, educational, and moral. Awareness is the first layer of defense.

A Call to Action

Dr. Ogunlana ended his Kaftan TV appearance with a strong message: “The hunger for quick money is destroying trust and opportunity. We must teach digital discipline, promote verified investment culture, and protect our people online.”

OSRS continues to support Nigeria’s fight against digital fraud through research, intelligence, and national awareness campaigns. Together, with informed citizens and proactive regulation, we can make the internet safer and stop the next Ponzi disaster before it starts.
