Nigeria’s Security Crisis Explained: A Conversation with Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim

Nigeria stands at a critical moment in its history. The nation continues to battle terrorism, banditry, communal clashes, and widespread instability that threatens its social and economic foundations. The magnitude of the crisis has captured global attention. Recent remarks from President Donald Trump, describing the situation as “genocide” and hinting at possible U.S. intervention, have intensified debate across diplomatic, academic, and security communities.

In my latest episode of the Global Security Brief Podcast, I sat with Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a respected businessman, human-rights advocate, and former Presidential Aspirant of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Our conversation offered a rare and timely insight into the complexity of Nigeria’s security landscape and the leadership required to rebuild stability.

Dr. Olawepo-Hashim shared his perspective on the root causes of insecurity, from economic deprivation to failures of governance. He explained how terrorism and banditry thrive in regions where institutions are weak and citizens lack trust in public authority. In his view, Nigeria’s crisis goes beyond insurgency. It reflects a deep structural imbalance that demands political courage and strategic reform.

One of the most compelling parts of our dialogue centered on what he calls The Olawepo Doctrine of Integrated Security and Prosperity. He described a model anchored in decentralized security, economic inclusion, intelligence-driven operations, and strong accountability. According to him, no nation can achieve durable security without systems that deliver justice, equity, and opportunity for all citizens.

We also explored the implications of President Trump’s comments.

Dr. Olawepo-Hashim cautioned against the idea of rejecting external intervention outright when circumstances genuinely warrant support. However, he emphasized that Nigeria must not disregard local context in the process. He argued that the nation needs dependable partners and that any intervention should be clearly defined within the scope of a responsible and respectful partnership.

True progress, in his view, begins with leadership that places national unity above political interest and human dignity above rhetoric.

This conversation offers valuable insights for policymakers, security professionals, scholars, and citizens seeking a clearer understanding of Nigeria’s current challenges. I believe it contributes meaningfully to the discourse on African stability and global cooperation.
